Your travels through Yuletide Forest have exposed you to all sorts of strange happenings, but perhaps you were not ready for the scene that plays out before you – one that goes against all your assumptions about the undead. Aye, what a scene this is. Skeletons are walking their skeletal dogs through a quaint little town, some are managing shops, and others are having a snowball fight with smaller skeletons. Even as they glance at you with their hollow eyes, they do not seem to mind you standing there.
"What in the ..." you mutter under your breath as you walk through the town, eavesdropping on the normal conversation these skeletons are having about the weather and the upcoming Yuletide festivities. What does one do in this situation? |
You approach two skeletons nearby. One is mulling about with some heavy boxes beside what seems like a pub and the other leans against the building, chugging a bottle of beer which just flows through their bones and creates a puddle beneath their feet. "Uh," you begin, "might one of you tell me what is happening here?"
The skeletons look at each other. Though they lack the expressions to convey such, the little chuckle the one leaning against the wall gives you suggests there is some level of understanding to your confusion.
"New in town? I'm Freddie," Freddie says putting down his beer, "Freddie Deader. Take it you've never seen a lil town of skellies before, aye?" Freddie folds his arms and nods at the other skeleton, who scuttles away with a box. "You've got nothin' to worry about. We're good, see? Come on, I'll tell you all about it. Let's go somewhere a bit more comfortable."

Freddie sits on a bench that has a good view of the town. You take a seat beside him and he begins to regale you.
"I take it you know that everyone here is very dead, aye?" Freddie chuckles, throwing an arm over your shoulder and pointing out at the skeletal folks that walk through the street. "She's dead. He's dead. They're dead. Everyone's dead, mate. But that ain't a problem here. See, here in this part of Yuletide, unlife goes on. We have dreams just like you livin' folks. Our hearts might've rotted away, but we can still feel. We can still cry even if there are no tears, you get me?"
"Yes. I can see that everyone is very dead here, it's just a bit surprising, is all." You reply. After so long maybe stuff like this shouldn't surprise you anymore. The world is a strange place, and while you've met a lot more nefarious undead than good ones, it has never been an impossibility.
"So uh, are you willing to help a skellie out?" Freddie's tone suddenly shifts. It takes you a bit off guard. |
"I know you just got here, but I already know who you are mate. See, word travels fast, and I've heard a lot about what you've done for the poor folks who live beyond the rattlin' trees." Freddie inches a bit closer "Look, we can't talk here. I've got a big mouth and I know someone's gonna hear me and they're gonna panic. I'll meet you at the town gate. Please, we need your help hero bud."

"Somethin' is goin' on out there at the loch, bud." Freddie looks out at the frozen wastes beyond the town. "Us skellies here remember how great Yuletide is. The singin', the dancin', and all that delicious food ... even in death we didn't wanna sacrifice any of that. So every year, just like everyone else, we put together a celebration and deck our tables with the finest bone food. Our centerpiece? A ginormous Dread Oncorhynchus ..."
Freddie doesn't take his eyes away from the frozen beyond. His voice suddenly turns sullen.
"Our finest Fisherbones go out and catch one of those beasts, but none have come back yet. Somethin' is goin' on and I don't like it. It won't be the same without a Dread Oncorhynchus to make the kiddos smile, so that's why I'm askin' if you can catch us a Dread Oncorhynchus?" |
"Wahoo!" Freddie leaps into the air and claps his hands. "I'll be comin' with you. It'd be rude to send you out there with no guide, aye? 'Sides, you need a Fisherbone like me to show you the ropes. I might not be as good as the others, but I know what I'm talkin' about! Let's go!"

The bitter silence that envelops the frozen loch is colder than the winter around you. "Light damn it, this place is spookier than normal ..." Freddie mutters, glancing around. "There's no one here. Where'd they all go–"
Freddie is unable to finish his sentence when you can feel a rumbling at your feet. You pull Freddie back, and Frostbitten Fisherbones burst out from the Loch wielding bent harpoons. |
"Aw man. They must've turned into bad ol' skellies. This is real bad." Freddie shuffles behind you but then suddenly shouts. "Oh hey! Maybe this'll be good! We'll need one of their Runic Fish Lures if we wanna catch the Dread Oncorhynchus! Maybe one of 'em still has theirs!'

"Are they gone yet, bud?" |
"Wahoo!" Freddie leaps into the air again and claps his bony hands. "Now the real fun begins. You gotta wear that Runic Fish Lure before you go out lookin' for the Bony Oncorhynchus. The skellifolks say that the rune emits this light that only the Dread Oncorhynchus can see. A terrible light that it don't like at all. Then, when it's found ya, it bursts out of the Bone Loch all mean like and you gotta smack it!"
You look out toward the vast expanse of the Bone Loch. Just how big is this Dread Oncorhynchus?

Freddie waits in anticipation. |
"By the Light!" Freddie runs up to the bony corpse of the Dread Oncorhynchus. "This is the biggest Dread Oncorhynchus I've ever seen! The kiddos are gonna go wild!"
Indeed, the Dread Oncorhynchus is much larger than you anticipated. A giant fish that, in life, would keep an entire town fed over the winter months. Instead, this undead beast was to fuel a town's happiness for yet another year. Though they would never know the taste of fish again or the warmth a hot meal brings to the gullet, the skeletons would still come together and make merry the festivities they held so dear in their missing hearts.
"So, how are we going to get this back to the town?" You ask, putting away your weapon.
"Oh, I'll fetch some of my buddies! It looks like some of the Frostbitten Fisherbones are finally comin' to their senses too. You head back. You've done a lot already!"

You walk back into town and see a crowd of skeletons awaiting the arrival of the Dread Oncorhynchus. Soon enough, Freddie and the other Fisherbones arrive with the monstrous fish in tow, and the crowd begins to clap and cheer.
Already the streets have been decorated with lights and baubles, with a large table built to cover the length of the main thoroughfare of the town. Freddie scuttles over to you and throws an arm around your shoulder. |
The skeletons were kind enough to put some edible food together for you as you stayed to watch the celebrations unfold. Freddie was dancing on the table with the kiddos, and the festive cheer was no different than a town that was alive. You watch fondly as the night goes on, thankful for another year of adventures to come.
