The Thangall Forest is ancient and filled with darkness, so when you see a lone wanderer dressed in leathers you draw your weapon and ready yourself for the attack.
You are surprised when the stranger stops and smiles at you, 'Hail and good tidings to you friend, may I speak with you for a while?' |
The man takes his hat off and gives you a bow, 'Greetings to you, my name is Garath and I am a servant of the Church of Light. I was pleasantly surprised to discover no Shadow in you so I did not have to extinguish you from the Realms. It does get rather tiring after a while if you believe me. May I ask why you are here?'
You point behind you and tell Garath that you had just traveled through Valgotic Halls and found yourself here. Garath grins at you, 'That is an impressive feat. The Valgotic Dwarfs are not the most friendly Clan by all the tales. If you came from there you might be just who I'm looking for. Being on a divine mission to expunge all evil from the world is a lonely business. It's astonishing how many friends one has to execute, but I'm not bitter at their betrayal of me and all that is holy. No, it's just another bump in the long road that has been laid out before me. So can I ask you to join me for a while on my journey through the Realms?'
Behind the jovial character of Garath, he has a presence of subtle invulnerability that comes only from true skill. You feel you do not want to upset this man, thus find yourself nodding slowly in agreement. Garath grins at you, 'Excellent, I'm sorry but I don't know if I can truly trust you with why I'm here. Don't take it personally, I just need a little time to get to know you if that is alright? Now, this forest is old and has many tales attached to it. Most of them extremely creepy and unpleasant. I just need you to verify a few things about the Pixies of this Glade. Can you please check to see if the Pixies are carrying a Sleeping Rune or something similar. I shall wait here for you.' |

Garath waits for you to return, 'Did you find a Sleep Rune on the Twisted Pixies?' |
Garath takes the Charm and closes his eyes, 'Oh, this is a potent Paralysis Charm. So they are eating people. This would let them feast on you without any fear of their dinner fighting back. Freely flowing blood would cut out the necessity for gravy I suppose. I guess we're on the right path. Could you meet me in the Copse there might be something interesting wandering around there.' |

He smiles at you pleasantly, 'You know, the thing about Undead is that they always do as they are told. I have seen some Hanged Men walking about and we need to know why they are up and about. Can you please bring me one of their Nooses.' |

Garath waits for you to return, 'Have you got one of the Thangall Forest Hangman's Noose yet?' |
Garath holds it in both hands then smiles grimly, 'Well, here we go again...' he closes his eyes and goes very silent. After a while Garath drops the Noose and takes out a hip flask and takes a sip. 'You know, the thing about superstition is that if enough people start believing it, the forces of Shadow seem to think to themselves "Hey, that's a good idea" and the superstition seems to actually work. It's bonkers really, but that's just my idea. The unfortunate who was hung by this rope had been falsely accused of stealing from his employer. The angry Spirit had not passed onto the afterlife and was trying to find a way to hurt whoever did this to him.'
He kicks the Noose at his feet, 'You see these knots, there are 13 of them, that was an anchor for the Spirit which kept him in this Realm. Without that he would have faded into nothing but superstition helped him manifest here. Powerful stuff really.'
'But the interesting thing is not that the Spirit "hung" around (Garath winks at you) but that he actually managed to animate the corpse. He had help with that. We need to investigate this further. I see a strange tower up ahead, I think we should look into it. Meet me in the Thangall Watchtower (Base). |

He shrugs, 'The Light has blessed me with certain abilities. One of them is I get a chill whenever the forces of Shadow are near by. I'm feeling plenty cold so watch yourself my Friend. I'll cover the exit whilst you venture deeper inside and find out who is in this tower.'
Search the Base and find a clue about who is living here. |

Garath stands by the exit to the Watchtower, 'Have you found a clue to who is living here?' |
Garath looks at it with vague interest, 'I know how important a properly cooked egg is in the morning, but apart from that I don't get why this is so important.' You smile and tell him to turn it upside down. He does so and then shakes it, the sands flow straight up. He looks at you, 'There seems to be no way of stopping the flow of sand. That is strange...' He then looks closer at the sand, 'The sands of timers are normally white, but these are grayish...' You then say, 'Those are the sands of the Shroud. I'm not too sure what that timer is counting down to, but it cannot be good.'
Garath drops the Timer instantly, 'We need to find out what is going on here, meet me upstairs at the Top of the Watchtower.' |

He nods, 'I had a look around and found a strange Eye sunk into the floor with those weird Watchers staring a it. It don't know what is going on, but I know we need to put a stop to whatever is happening here.'

You find a huge eye sunk into the floor of the Watchtower. Around the eye you see several watchers staring into it. You edge closer to try to find out what they are doing when they see you and attack you instantly. You must kill 100 Tower Watchers and destroy the Eye. |
As the last of the Tower Watchers die you pick up one of their dark swords. Walking straight up to the Eye of Communion you drive the sword as deep into it as you can. You expect a scream and the tower to shudder. But all that that happens is that the Eye vanishes and silence fills the tower. You should return to Garath and tell him what you have done. |

Garath stands in the ruined town street and draws his long traveling cloak around him. |
'As a Witch Hunter of the Church of Light everyone thinks all I do is kill Witches. But my duties are actually eliminating any magical threat to the Realms or it's Peoples. As such I hunt down anything that falls within those parameters. I don't do bandits or fight in political wars. I have a divine mission that means I have to be above those concerns.'
'In my readings of the Mages Circle I found an discrepancy about a Mage called Gatto, he had an enrollment date and and education but then the record stops. The Circle keeps meticulous records and details the death of every Mage in their society. So according to the Circles records Gatto has not died since the Circle sent him here to the Town of Atrum. Now we just need to make sure that these Zombies are not raised by the Mage Gatto. Search the Atrum Towns Zombie's and bring me the Nectomantic Seal within. Every Zombie has one so it sould not be too hard to find. I shall wait here until you return.' |

Garath takes the Seal and holds it on both hands and goes silent. 'Yes, I see the standard Circle structure within the incantation and the signature of Gatto within the weaving. So I was right, we must find and destroy the rogue Mage Gatto. Meet me in the Slums, I feel a particularly dark energy there.' |

The faint screams of the Atrum Ghosts echo through the Slums. Garath draws his travel cloak closer to himself as if to ward off some inner cold. |
The Witch Hunter smiles back at you weakly, 'The chill is intensifying. I think we are closing in on Gatto. But he is cunning. He has left just enough of the old City Guard within these Zombies to make them a serious threat. Kill 280 Risen Hero's so that we may pass through this section of Town. |

The Witch Hunter nods, 'Good, we can move on into the Desecrated Plots meet me there.' The somber Witch Hunter tightens his belt and advances into the depths of the undead town without another word. As you watch him go a dread comes over you as you think of the chill cold enough to drive Garath's jovial nature away, and you wonder what horror awaits you both... |

Garath grimaces, 'I always thought feeling the cold heart of my enemy when they are near was a blessing. But it seems that if the evil within my enemy is too great I can actually be paralyzed by their evil. I cannot move, I have never felt this before. There is something very different with these Shadow Risen, can you find out what.' |

Garath mutters a prayer under his breath, 'Have you discovered anything unusual about the Shadow Risen?' |
The Witch Hunter takes the Shadow Haze from you in shaking hands. You watch him take a deep breath and concentrate on the evil essence he holds. After a moment he struggles for breath then opens his eyes. 'There is such evil within this object.' He then opens his backpack and puts the Haze in a runed box. As the box snaps shut the runes glow with a white light.
He shoulders his pack and smiles grimly, 'There are Shroud energies within the Necromantic weaving which I have never seen or heard of before. I will take a sample back to my Mentor for further study. But we still have Gatto to deal with, Meet me in the Tombs it is the only place we have not checked...' |

The Witch Hunter nods sadly, 'I hope you are right. I feel warmth returning to my bones so I think I can move more easily now. I shall go retrieve his staff and take it back to my Mentor as well. Maybe they can discover something more about what powers he had. I don't like this mixing Shroud and Undeath spell weavings. No good can come of it. Thank you warrior, Take this Witch Hunter Ring as a mark of my friendship, I could not have done this without you. May you walk in Light.'
