In the harsh uncaring Wilds you find a Monk dressed in black robes. He is obviously suffering. |
His face is hidden in the dark cowl of his robes, obscuring his face in darkness. From it's depths a frail voice croaks, 'I'm as well as can be expected. I have been afflicted by a sickness that is coursing through my body like fire. I believe it is from the Divine to test my resolve. Do not worry, I am not contagious. This suffering is purely confined within my flesh.' You feel his eyes on you as if starring into your very soul. You shiver despite the midday sun. You nod quickly, mumble a quick farewell and turn away.
The Monk then reaches to you imploring, 'Warrior, would yo...' a savage coughing ravages him, cutting off his sentence. You stop and turn to see his hand outstretched with pale skin peeling from his fingers and back of his hand. From you're horrified expression he quickly retracts his hand back into the dark folds of his black robe. 'I'm sorry Warrior. You seem to be strong and of noble character. I could use your help. You see, there is a large town not far from here called Crestoun. It is a backward place with its stiff-necked people still clinging to their old ridiculous beliefs and superstitions. I have tried to instruct them in the true faith, but they refuse to acknowledge the light of wisdom even when it is said directly to their faces. They rejected me and what I taught, then drove me from Crestoun. That is how I find myself wandering these Wilds seeking my path. I don't think it is any coincidence that we met my friend.'
He pauses and you realize that just speaking is taking its toll on the poor Monk. After a long moment he regains his breath, 'I must return to Crestoun and offer a sacrifice on their behalf. They will not let me back into the town, but there is a forgotten shrine in the Crestoun Graveyard. Would you help me collect a suitable sacrifice and travel with me to the forgotten shrine?' |

The Monk waits in silence for your answer. You look around and see the cruel Wilds and wonder how long the frail Monk will last on his own. |
The Monk nods then points into the nearby hills, 'I must symbolically slay all that is wrong with this region on the shine's altar. This will show the gods that it is not the people's fault they cling onto their outdated beliefs, the environment that is around them shapes their thinking. I feel the people of Crestoun need a longer period of grace before the coming times. This realm has been home to heartless bandits that prey on travelers that have lost their way. Take this recipe, it will show you how to craft one of their daggers. Bring me a Bloodmarked Dagger as a symbol of the hungry greed that permeates this place.'

The frail Monk waits for you're return, 'Have you managed to acquire a Bloodmarked Dagger?' |
'This is just perfect for the offering, it's essence is completely selfish. Next we must have a symbol of arrogance, meet me in the Dorthan (Vale). I know just the thing to demonstrate such a characteristic.'
The Monk then slowly fades from sight. You blink in surprise and after looking around for a moment you suppose you have better follow him to the Dorthan (Vale). |

You find the Monk coughing into a handkerchief. The black cowl of the dark robes swings in your direction as you approach. In his wheezing voice he says, 'Did my leaving the Wilds startle you Warrior?' |
The Monk simply shrugs, 'People often suppose that the arcane has a monopoly on magic, this is of course reinforced by mages who seek to cement their position as rulers of this world. I will tell you a secret Warrior. As one ascends in our order, we are gifted with certain abilities by those we serve. Is it really a surprise that some of these abilities are quite potent? We Monks prefer to keep such gifts secret though. This brings me nicely to the next element of our sacrifice. In ages past there was once a mage called Drolag, he sought to protect his precious mansion with mighty eagles. But of course these couldn't just be any old eagles, these had to be magical eagles! So Drolag bound an innocent eagle spirit to a potent incantation that manifests as a rune on the death of the Great Eagle. It is a testament to the power of Drolag that his eagles still hunt the skies today, but what right does a Mage have to warp the shape of the world to serve his own personal whims?'
'Take this recipe and bring me the Echo of Drolag and we shall see the true nature of this powerful mage. Be quick now, we still have much to do.'

The Monk stands waiting for you, 'Did you manage to best the Great Eagle and take the Echo of Drolag? |
Well done Warrior. The Great eagles have been a scourge of these lands for years uncounted. It is no small thing to take one let alone a dozen or so. Now let's examine this artifact.' The Monk holds the blazing feather in his pale hands and begins to murmur. After a while the Echo starts to shimmer then break apart into three floating orbs of glowing light.
The Monk looks at you, 'This is certainly interesting. The three components represent the driving forces of Drolag. He was grasping for power and eternally fearful for those who might be plotting against him. He contently searched for betrayal even from those close to him. None of this is really surprising, the interesting thing is that his power is represented by this soaring feather. This shows that Drolag had not trafficked with dark spirits for his magic but drew it from the land around him. This is the harder road to power, but actually shows that he was not corrupted by power as one would assume. It was his fragile character that drove him to his foolishness. Although I think that this will serve us well in our next endeavor.'
Then two of the floating orbs suddenly evaporate and the Monk hands you the remaining orb, 'Take this Drolag Orb and meet me in the Dorthan Wood (North). He then bows and fades silently from sight.
